Biography
Sultan Hasanuddin was born in Makassar on January 12, 1631. He was born to Sultan Malikussaid, the 15th King of Gowa, with I Sabbe To'mo Lakuntu. Since childhood, his leadership traits can be seen. He is known as a smart figure and he is also good at trading. That's why he has a good trade network up to Makassar, even with foreigners.
Sultan Hasanuddin received his religious education at the Bontoala Mosque. Since childhood he was often invited by his father to attend important meetings, hoping to absorb diplomacy and war strategy. It is believed many times that he is the representative for sending messages to various jobs.
Sultan Hasanuddin was appointed for defense affairs of Gowa at the age of 21. There are two versions of history that can explain when he was made king, namely when he was 24 years old or 1655 and when he was 22 years old or 1653. He would continue his kingdom based on the will of Sultan Malikussaid.
Apart from his father, he received guidance regarding governance through the Mangkubumi Kingdom of Gowa, Karaeng Pattingaloang. Sultan Hasanuddin is a teacher from Arung Palakka, one of the Kings of Bone who will later collaborate with the Dutch to overthrow the Kingdom of Gowa.
During his tenure, Sultan Hasanuddin had to deal with the Dutch who wanted to monopolize the spices and trade products in Eastern Indonesia. The Netherlands prohibits all kingdoms in Makassar from trading with Dutch enemies.
Sultan Hasanuddin continued the principle of his father and grandfather that they must use the land and sea products together. This rejection underlies the Dutch attack on small kingdoms in eastern Indonesia led by Admiral Cornelis Speelman.
Although part of the kingdom was destroyed, the Dutch failed to control the Kingdom of Gowa because of its capable naval fleet. In addition, Sultan Hasanuddin did not fight alone, he succeeded in joining forces with other small kingdoms.
Sultan Hasanuddin did not only face the Dutch. Some of them were forced to work to build a fort against the Dutch. He finally resigned and was offered cooperation with the Dutch. Arung Palakka faces a dilemma, he is fed up with Dutch greed but he also wants to overthrow the kingdom of Gowa.
He finally fled to Batavia in 1663 to choose to cooperate with the Dutch. The start of the war on 24 November 1666, when Arung Palakka and his 400 soldiers rubbed against the Dutch fleet with 21 warships and a thousand partisans headed for Sulawesi. Arung Palakka's confrontation with the Dutch against Sultan Hasanuddin ended on 18 November 1667. Finally, they attacked and again hijacked a Dutch merchant ship which ended in the Makassar War on 12 April 1668.

Even though the Dutch was getting stronger, Sultan Hasanuddin still refused to cooperate with the Dutch. Sultan Hasanuddin then resigned from the throne of the kingdom of Gowa and died on June 12, 1670. He was buried in the funeral complex of the kings of Gowa in Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi. To honor his services, the Indonesian government made him a national hero. And his name is also immortalized as several place names in Indonesia.
