The Brandenburg Gate
Hello Everyone!
How are you guys? I hope all of you stay healthy in this pandemic. Now, i wanna tell you about A Neoclassical monument in Berlin. That's Brandenburg Gate. Curious about the building? So, let's check this out...
The Building
The Brandenburg Gate is a neoclassical monument in Berlin (Germany). The Brandenburg Gate which in German is called the Brandenburg Tor was built between 1788 and 1791. This is the only remaining town gate of Berlin, Germany. The Brandenburg Gate is located in the City of Berlin, between Pariser Platz and Platz des 18. März, precisely on Erbert Street in the western part of the city center, west of Pariser Platz. This monument stands at the western end of the avenue Unter den Linden. It has served as a symbol of both the division of Germany and the country’s reunification and is one of Berlin’s most visited landmarks.
The building is 26 meters high. The building consists of twelve Doric columns, six on each side, forming the five entrances to the highway. Above the gate is the Quadriga, with Viktoria, the Roman goddess of victory riding the Quadriga. The Quadriga faces the East side.
The History of The Brandenburg Gate
Bradenburg is the Friedenstor or Gateway of Peace. However, at that time it was not peace that was realized, but this gate became a witness to war. In 1806 Napoleon's army won the war and entered Berlin. As the winner of the war, the Quadriga Statue was seized and brought to Paris. After Napoleon's defeat, the Quadriga statue finally returned to Berlin in 1814. The Quadriga statue was redesigned by Karl Friedrich Schinkel as Victoria, the goddess of victory, who held the symbol of the Prussian cross and eagle.
On January 12, 1987, the Brandenburg Gate witnessed the history in which US President Ronald Reagan's speech was set. In his speech, Ronald Reagan urged Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall and unify Germany. When the Berlin Wall separating West Berlin and East Berlin was torn down on November 9, 1989, thousands of people came to celebrate victory at the Brandenburg Gate. Today, the Brandenburg Gate is a symbol of peace and a symbol of the unification of Berlin which was once separated.
